Another Coppola Makes Mark in Showbiz
by Jane Ciabattari

"I remember it was weird to see Mom onscreen, but I didn't grow up in that world -- I had to get this part on my own." Says 18-year-old Jason Schwartzman, who stars as a precious teen in the critically acclaimed film Rushmore. "Mom" is Talia Shire of Rocky fame, born Talia Coppola. Jason's uncle is the director Francis Ford Coppola, and Nicolas Cage (born Nicolas Coppola) is his cousin. Still, Jason says he's "very un-Hollywood."

"I just went to school," insists Jason. Though he'd never acted onscren (he has played drums for four years in the band Phantom Planet), Jason beat out 1800 other actors to land the role of Max Fischer, a student at Rushmore Academy trying to woo a teacher who's also being courted by a middle-aged tycoon (Bill Murray).

Like Max, who mother is dead, Jason lost a parent. "My dad [producer Jack Schwartzman] died when I was 14," he says. "It's hard to lose your dad right when you're entering manhood. You lose the person who teaches you how to tie a tie and talk to girls."
